Lake O Water Flows into Caloosahatchee
With the rainy season fast approaching, this week, we decided to ask
those in charge
of managing Lake Okeechobee water releases into the Caloosahatchee River
what might happen as the summertime nutrient-laden fresh water releases begin anew. Last week, the Army Corps of Engineers announced that they would
increase flows from the lake due to increased rainfall and rising water levels,
so we spoke with Public Affairs Specialist John H. Campbell of the Tallahassee
office to see what predictions they think may be in store for us in the coming months.

First Turtle Nest of Season on Fort Myers Beach
As readers pick up their Sand Paper on Friday morning, another month will have
begun and with it the beginning of another season - Turtle Season. From May 1st to October 31st, our island will be visited by (hopefully) hundreds of gentle denizens
from the deep, who will crawl onto our emerald shores to lay their eggs - thus
beginning another cycle in the glorious circle of life. Little did we know that the
turtles have beaten us to the punch - the first recorded nest of 2015 was dug on
Fort Myers Beach on April 24th, and since then two more have appeared on
Sanibel Island and on a Collier County beach. To Turtle Time founder
Eve Haverfield, that’s some very good news.
