Last Thursday, members of the South Florida Water
Management District’s (SFWMD) governing board met in the Lee County
Commission Chambers in downtown Fort Myers where presentations on past
and future Everglades restoration projects were received with mixed
emotions from those who would like to see more focus on efforts to store
and treat water south of Lake Okeechobee. During a discussion on local water quality projects, Lee County
Natural Resources Director Roland Ottolini said that the major driver of
those projects is the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) process and
compliance with Best Management Practices (BMAPs) and that the county
has made a $37 million commitment to these programs. CLICK HERE to read full story.
At this Monday’s Council workshop – scheduled for 2pm –
Interim Town Manager Jim Steele will present the results of the 2016
Water Rate Study conducted by the consulting firm Raftelis Financial
Consultants. This week, Steele showed us a draft of that study and
explained that the reasoning behind doing the study was to give the Town
a better understanding of how much residents’ potable water bills would
need to be raised to pay for the completion of the water line
replacement project, the building of a reserve fund, the increased costs
for operation and maintenance and the increases in what Lee County
charges us for water. CLICK HERE to read full story.
No Hearing Set for Stilwell Yet- Legal Expenses Mount
At Monday’s special budget meeting, Mayor Dennis Boback disregarded
the urging of two of his fellow council members to bring a quick end to
any possible litigation involving former Town Manager Don Stilwell by
changing their decision to terminate him from ‘with’ to ‘without cause.’
Instead, Boback directed Town Attorney Dawn Lehnert to call Stilwell’s
attorney – George Knott – to ‘find out what he wants’ and report back at
the June 20th Council meeting.
