30th Annual Sand Sculpting Championship
When we were young, we played with sand pales and shovels at the
shore’s edge, piling one scoop onto another, creating in our hearts
world-class castles that boggled the mind. While our parents told us
these were masterpieces, we knew we left a great deal to the
imagination. As the largest sand sculpting event in The Sunshine State
turns 30, however, the only thing left to the imagination is that the
sky is the limit! The 30th annual American Sand Sculpting Championship returns to Fort Myers Beach
from Friday, November 18, to Sunday, November 27 at the Wyndham Garden
Hotel at 6890 Estero Boulevard. Sand sculptors ply their craft and
showcase their artistry in what USA Today and CNN Travel describe as a
Must See Event and one of the 10 best sand sculpting competitions in the
world. CLICK HERE to read more.
Lake O Releases Down
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District began
dry-season flows from Lake Okeechobee to the Caloosahatchee Estuary last
weekend. The adjustment in discharges took place on Friday, November 11th. The
new target flow for the Caloosahatchee Estuary will be a seven day
average of 650 cubic feet per second (cfs) as measured at W.P. Franklin
Lock (S-79) near Fort Myers. No water from the lake is expected to be
released through St. Lucie Lock (S-80) near Stuart. However, flows at
either the Franklin or St. Lucie structures could occasionally be
exceeded by runoff from rain that accumulates in the Caloosahatchee or
St. Lucie basins-those flows will be allowed to pass through the
spillway as necessary. CLICK HERE to read more.
Council Listens to DOT Ideas
The Fort Myers Beach Town Council met in the first of two workshop sessions Monday, November 6th
to discuss a variety of topics that included: a Department of
Transportation presentation on future roadway improvements; an update on
the Estero Boulevard road, sewer, and waterline upgrades; and the
parking compliance ordinance. During Public Comment, Charlie Whitehead, who made clear he is not a
Fort Myers Beach town resident, alerted Town Council that the Lee Board
of County Commissioners will take up the proposed Bay Harbour Marina
Village matter for San Carlos Island on Wednesday, November 16. He
called the potential development “too dense, too tall and incompatible
with the surrounding area.” It would worsen traffic and spur similar
developments that would eventually be bad for Fort Myers Beach. He asked
for any help the Town could provide to deny the project. CLICK HERE to read more.
Two travel lanes are expected to be open for this week of Thanksgiving. Crews will work on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; and will not work Thursday through Sunday. Contractors for the Town of Fort Myers Beach and Lee County are installing new water main, and sanitary sewer force main, storm drainage, sidewalk and rebuilding roadway on Estero Boulevard from Crescent Street to Madera Road. Two travel lanes are expected to remain open the majority of the project; however, motorists may experience daytime and nighttime one-lane traffic on Estero Boulevard. Flaggers will alternate traffic frequently, but motorists should expect delays. Crews are expected to work Monday through Friday and most Saturdays. Construction will be year-round. This schedule may change due to underground conditions and inclement weather. Get more updates 24/7 at reFRESHFMBeach
