Lovers Key to Build Visitor Center
Construction Set for Spring 2018
While roughly 200 people celebrated the 20th anniversary of Lovers Key State Park on Friday evening, November 17, a great deal of conversation that night centered around an amenity yet to exist: The new indoor visitor center, exhibit area and classroom space that will break ground in Spring 2018! “Seven years ago, the Friends Of Lovers Key State Park (FOLKS) took on the monumental task of pushing for a visitor center,” recalled Rich Donnelly, FOLKS President. “At that time, Lovers Key was the 3rd most visited state park, with no indoor facility to host lectures and classes and weddings and social occasions, and one was clearly necessary, so we launched a campaign and today we are proud to say that the Florida State Legislature has allocated $4 million to build this dream.”  FULL STORY

Free Seasonal Nature Walks Begin
Lee County Parks & Recreation invites Fort Myers Beach residents and visitors to explore the barrier island, shorelines, and conservation areas through a series of free nature walks led by volunteer naturalists from now through spring. The first one was the Bowditch Point Park nature walk along the 17-acre natural jewel at the northern tip of Estero Island, managed by Lee County Parks & Recreation. While the walks will be volunteer-led, most of those folks – like birds – are seasonal migrants who are still making their way South for the Winter, so our guide on the initial program was Fort Myers Beach natural treasure Terry Cain, the Land Stewardship Coordinator for Lee County Parks & Recreation for 13 years! The day’s warm sunshine and light breeze made it a striking morning, ideal for the dozen or so participants. “We will see fascinating things,” promised Terry, “as beach parks change every day due to the shifting sands. Most of the parks actually look pretty good, considering the damage left from Hurricane Irma, but that wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of our dedicated volunteers; because of them, we were able to reopen most of our sites much earlier than we thought.”  FULL STORY

It is the official start to the holiday season and what better way to ring it in than by attending some of these fun events happening on Fort Myers Beach.

Come enjoy some Christmas spirit at the 29th Annual Fort Myers Beach Christmas Boat Parade!  Last year we had over 30 boats participating and this year promises to be even more exciting.  The parade begins at Salty Sam’s Marina and will pass by such establishments as Parrot Key Caribbean Grill, Matanzas on the Bay, Nervous Nellies, Doc Fords, Dixie Fish Co., Shrimp Dock, and Bonita Bills where you can kick back and enjoy the fun.

Come celebrate the birthday of the Town of Fort Myers Beach and New Year’s Eve at Time Square. Festivities begin at noon with free cupcakes starting between noon and 1pm.  Live music will be played throughout the day.  Ball drop is at midnight followed by fireworks off of the pier.  Don’t miss the fun! Be aware the bridge will be closed ONLY to oncoming traffic from 12:15am to 1:15 am during the fireworks. There will also be extended trolley service until 2am.
