Few things go together better than music and nature, especially when the venue overlooks one of the most beautiful sunsets anywhere on earth. The new season of the “Songwriters at Sunset” series begins at the Lovers Key State Park beach gazebo on Thursday, December 7, at 4 p.m. The acoustic concerts, featuring all original music, continue the first Thursday of each month through April, and are a joint collaboration between the Friends of Lovers Key State Park (FOLKS) and the American Community Music Association (ACMA). Opening evening performers are Hank Woji, Eileen Kozloff and “The Reckless Saints,” composed of Roy Schneider and Kim Mayfield. The “Songwriters at Sunset” series is the brainchild of the dynamic couple of Bob and Shelley-Sue Williams, as Bob is the ACMA president and Shelley-Sue the FOLKS Director of Communications/Media Committee Chair.  FULL STORY

Crescent Beach Park Re-Nourishment Underway

Recovery efforts from Hurricane Irma continue all over the State of Florida, including a high profile project right in the middle of one of the most heavily-used tourism areas on Fort Myers Beach. “The back side of Irma came in high enough that it produced waves that hit Crescent Beach Family Park,” said Steve Boutelle, Marine Operations Manager for the Natural Resources Division for Lee County. “Waves rammed up against the old seawall there and reflected off of it to pull sand away from the beach. Without the sand there, at the high tide, the reduction to the recreation value to the park is pretty dramatic.” Because of the emergency nature of the Crescent Beach situation, Lee County Commissioners waived their normal solicitation procedure to obtain goods or services over $100,000. “We still needed to go through the formalized process of securing at least three competitive bids,” he said, “but this removed some of the formalities to make everything move quicker, before the situation grew worse and required more funds for repairs. The Commissioners set a $200,000 ceiling as a safe number, but we expected the competitive bid process to truck in compatible beach sand to restore the area to its condition prior to the hurricane to be well under that figure. Fortunately, we had three bidders, with Eastman Aggregate Enterprises of Lake Worth getting the contract at $105,300. They will truck in the replacement sand from the Stewart Mine in Immokalee. Funding comes from the Tourist Development Council (TDC) Tax, from monies Lee County sets aside annually in anticipation of such projects.”  FULL STORY
