San Carlos Blvd. Traffic Study Underway
After three years of research, over one million dollars in taxpayer money, and roughly a one-year postponement in hosting its public forum session, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) finally held its long-anticipated open house to discuss the operational analysis study for San Carlos Boulevard (State Road 865). The area under examination is roughly a 3.1-mile route, from Summerlin Road to Crescent Street on Fort Myers Beach, including the Matanzas Pass Bridge. FDOT conducted the forum at Chapel By The Sea Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, February 27, before roughly 150 to 200 people, from 5 to 7 p.m. The purpose of the operational analysis study is to determine deficiencies that exist along the project corridor and identify specific improvement alternatives to reduce travel time on San Carlos Boulevard during peak seasons and better transport people onto and off Fort Myers Beach and San Carlos Island. Traffic volume on this stretch in-season reaches as high as 25,000 vehicles per day and may rise to over 31,000 in the coming decades. Since beginning its work in May 2015, FDOT conducted analyses and held stakeholder meetings to identify potential improvements to enhance transit services to determine recommendations for the next stage in the development plan. The open house was to be almost exactly one year ago, but the Fort Myers Beach Town Council and Lee County Metropolitan Planning Organization urged its delay because most of the ideas were repeats from previous presentations.  FULL STORY
