Life on Fort Myers Beach

Fort Myers Beach TOP NEWS

Making Preparations for Turtle Season
Turtle Time Right Around the Corner! As you inch along in traffic this St. Patrick’s Day Weekend, remember the Shrimp Festival is now in your rear view mirror and Easter is just two weeks away, meaning the end of Season is in sight! Once we get past Easter, our residents’ northern migration will begin, officially marking the end of Tourist Season near the second week of April. As people head north, another annual Fort Myers Beach tradition begins – the advent of Turtle Nesting Season! Before you leave the beach, Turtle Time, Inc., offers helpful hints to make your home or condominium Turtle Friendly. Eve Haverfield founded the non-profit Turtle Time, Inc., in 1989, to save marine turtles on Big Hickory Island and Bonita, Bunche and Fort Myers Beaches. “Turtle nesting season is officially from May 1 through October 31,” she said, “but the State of Florida asks us to start monitoring our zones beginning Sunday, April 15, as Gulf of Mexico waters are already warming into the low-to-mid-70s, and we know turtles are gathering in the area. Once the water reaches 80 degrees, that makes conditions conducive for the nesting process, with mothers coming on-shore to make their nests and lay eggs, so that is why we start early, to not miss any nests. If you see turtle tracks, please report them to us, as we appreciate all the eyes we can get out there. We have had nests on Fort Myers Beach as early as April 25, because turtles pay attention to the conditions and not the calendar!”  FULL STORY

Council’s M & P Session Covers Multiple Topics
The Town of Fort Myers Beach Council enjoyed a rare light agenda and brief meeting on Monday, March 5. Things returned to normal, however, on Thursday, March 8, when its Management & Planning Session contained numerous lengthy consequential items, including the monthly reFRESH Estero Boulevard update, a Noise Ordinance delivery issue, and conversations concerning the upcoming Big Carlos Bridge reconstruction, Seafarer’s Mall property future usage, and the proposed Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District, among other issues, lasting almost 4-1/2 hours. “Construction is moving as expected now for the roadway project,” reported Doug Meurer, Assistant County Manager for Lee County. “We anticipate the current segment to be complete by December, and work has now accelerated so everything will be done by 2021.” “Wow!” exclaimed Council member Anita Cereceda; “That’s super accelerated!” Council asked Meurer questions concerning a number of topics, such as if Lee County has plans to take over management of the Bay Oak Recreation Center, a presentation on Beach Accesses, potential safety improvements as suggested at the recent Florida Department of Transportation forum on February 27, future Estero Boulevard landscaping, the April 1 transition of Building Permit Services from Lee County to the Town, mail delivery issues on sidewalks and construction zones, trolley & tram access to Bay Oaks, Big Carlos Bridge construction and Seafarer’s Mall future usage.  FULL STORY
