Following months of delay, numerous drafts, uncounted citizen comments and vigorous debate the Town of Fort Myers Beach’s controversial Short Term Rental Ordinance was on the verge of defeat, before the member who opposes it most, threw a lifeline, at its Second Reading & Public Hearing at the Town Council meeting on Monday, March 19. After over two hours of Public Comment and additional debate that resulted in suggestions to allow condominium associations to opt-out and remove two monetary fine formats, Council member Anita Cereceda clearly remained against the Ordinance, as she has for months. New Vice Mayor Joanne Shamp, however, made a Motion to approve the amended-again proposal, with new Mayor Tracey Gore seconding it. FULL STORY
Fire Station 31 Future in Doubt
The Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District Board of Commissioners met Tuesday evening in their sole March meeting. Executive Assistant Fire Chief for Operations Scott Wirth provided a 30-minute presentation on the district’s Operations Branch, using the district’s response to the recent Delmar fire to illustrate how the district responds to a fire. One fact he shared was that at the peak of the Delmar fire, the district was pumping 1,000 gallons per minute on the fire. During the Chief’s Report, Fire Chief Matt Love reported that the district is in the process of hiring firefighter paramedics as well as a Facilities and Logistics Manager. He reported that Local 1826 held their Muscular Dystrophy Association boot drive recently raising $13,601 on Fort Myers Beach with the county raising $185,000. FULL STORY

7:20pm, Matanzas Pass Preserve. This experiential hands- on program will awaken and sharpen participant’s senses of smell, touch, hearing and night vision. Join two volunteers carrying candle-lit lanterns through the Preserve as night descends and celebrate the darkness and the moon. Meet at the entrance to the Preserve behind the Historical Cottage on Bay Street. Program is free, but pre-registration is required. Adults only. Limited to 12 participants.
