FMB Waters Cleaner Than Most 

Blue-Green Algae and Red Tide concerns are dominating Southwest Florida headlines. Fort Myers Beach, however, continues to avoid the most devastating circumstances. Rae Burns, the Environmental & Stormwater Technician for the Town of Fort Myers Beach, and Rae Ann Wessel, the Natural Resources Policy Director for the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF), provide their latest updates. “Not only does the Town do its own water quality testing,” said Burns, “but several other agencies test it as well. When you combine field and laboratory work, we have over 30 tests on a weekly or monthly basis. Besides the Town, the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the Lee County and State of Florida Departments of Health, Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the SCCF, and Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve monitor our conditions, and you can find these results on-line. Various tests monitor blue-green algae, Red Tide, nutrients and other parameters. Not only do you get the latest results, but the FWC works with the University of South Florida to look ahead one week, to forecast Red Tide conditions, and the SCCF equipment monitors conditions almost to the minute, though the vast majority of their locations are on the Caloosahatchee River, with just one near Fort Myers Beach. The Town primarily tests for nitrogen, nitrogen nitrate, phosphorous, and any other junk that comes from our own storm water flows, having begun this roughly six months ago.”  FULL ARTICLE

TDC Talks Tourists, Taxes and Water

The Tourist Development Council met last week to discuss several topics of interest to Island visitors and residents. The TDC is a nine-member advisory board to the Lee County Board of County Commissioners. The TDC oversees the Lee County Visitor and Convention Bureau (VCB) and the bed tax fund, composed of a 5% tax on vacation rentals of less than 6 months in Lee County. Allocation of bed tax funds are determined by county ordinance as: 53.6% Advertising and Promotion (VCB operations and Lee County Sports Development operations); 26.4% Beach and Shoreline improvements and maintenance and 20% Stadium Debt Service. Fiscal Year 16-17 bed tax collections were over $39.7 million. Collections this year are trending 8% higher than last year.  FULL ARTICLE
