Life on Fort Myers Beach

TOP NEWS

Water Conditions Fort Myers Beach
Red Tide: The mid-week October 10, 2018 Florida Fish & Wildlife Red Tide Report showed “patchy” concentrations of Red Tide from Pinellas to Lee counties. Karenia brevis cell concentrations decreased in most areas of Lee County as well as Collier, Charlotte and Sarasota counties and in some areas of Manatee County. “High” levels of K.brevis, over 1 million cells/liter, were only seen in three locations, in Pinellas and Manatee counties and offshore in Charlotte County. “Medium” levels, between 100,000 and 1 million cells/liter, were found in those same counties plus Sarasota County.

Jordan Marsh Park, Sanibel Water Quality Project
While many local governments talk Water Quality, the City of Sanibel is taking tangible action to improve its local conditions. The Jordan Marsh Water Quality Treatment Park, now under construction with an estimated completion date of the end of 2018, will draw water from the Sanibel Slough through a series of wetland treatment areas, to remove nutrients prior to its discharge back into the slough. “The filter marsh parcel is just shy of a 7-acres,” explained Holly Milbrandt, Environmental Biologist for the City of Sanibel. “The City purchased it in 2000 because the east end of Sanibel was already so developed that this was one of the last remaining properties we could acquire for environmental preservation. Even back then, well before our recent water quality crises, the thought was it would make an excellent filter marsh location. Construction began right after Labor Day, to be done by Christmas, with an early 2019 public ribbon-cutting. While construction just recently began, Sanibel has been doing the filter marsh park design and permitting for over a year.”  FULL ARTICLE
