Lover’s Key State Park Welcome and Discovery Center Groundbreaking December 6th
Lovers Key State Park (LKSP) is one of the most visited
of all Florida State Parks, averaging roughly 1.2 million annual
visitors, all without an indoor building. This, however, will soon
change, as Lovers Key will have the groundbreaking for its new Welcome
& Discovery Center on Thursday, December 6. “While the groundbreaking is the dawn of a new Lovers Key State Park
era, it is a ceremonial occasion,” said Katie Moses, the new LKSP
Manager. “Construction on the $4 million, 4,000-square-foot building
actually begins next year, either in late February or early March, with
work to be complete in Spring 2020.”Sweet Sparkman is the architect, with the State Bureau of Design in
charge, with contracts awarded to Oak Construction, ME3 Engineering and
Johnson Engineering. “The last is particularly appropriate, awesome and a
special touch,” Katie related, ‘”as Carl E. Johnson first formed the
original park that became known as Carl E. Johnson Park, managed by Lee
County, before it eventually merged with the fledgling Lovers Key State
Park.” Today, LKSP is 1,616 acres with a beach, hiking and kayak trails
among its many amenities.
