NYE Fireworks, Show Plans Move Ahead
It looks like there will be New Year’s Eve fireworks at Midnight off the Fort Myers Beach pier after all!
This event has been up in the air, so to speak, for the last two
years, as some current Town Council members are less than enthusiastic
about New Year’s Eve fireworks and any Town participation, despite that
December 31 is the Town’s 23rd birthday and all Council
members want to honor that occasion. The uneasy alliance dictates that a
volunteer committee raises private dollars to pay for fireworks, while
the Town will fund up to $10,000 for public safety and associated event
functions. “We hosted two fireworks fundraisers so far,” said Jacki Liszak, who
chairs the Fundraising Committee. “They were at the Mermaid Lounge &
Liquors, then at the Nauti Turtle Dock Bar. There is an on-going
fundraiser through December 21 at the Salty Crab Bar & Grill at 1154
Estero Boulevard, where you buy a 50/50 raffle ticket for $5 or 5 for
$20. There will be an upcoming fundraiser soon at Shucker’s at The
Gulfshore & The Cottage, and the Lani Kai Island Resort will donate
$1 from every Rum Runner sale and hold a December 15 Fireworks
Fundraiser from 12-5pm. While these are fantastic, we would certainly
welcome a title sponsor!” FULL ARTICLE
Friends of The Arts Concert Series Features Local Faves
A nationally-known entertainer, a local musical legend, the beach’s
own television star, tribute bands and a special fundraiser for Beach
Elementary School headline the 7th annual “Winter Concert Series” sponsored by the Fort Myers Beach Friends of the Arts. The “Winter Concert Series” begins with a free show, featuring Al
Holland, Jo List and The Pearl Street Band on Sunday, December 9, at
Santini Marina Plaza from 2 – 4 p.m. “The FMB Friends of the Arts wanted
the first concert to be free,” said Janeen Paulauskis, Friends of the
Arts Board member and series spokesperson. “It is our way to give back
to the community, after the challenge of a difficult summer over water
and economic issues. It is also perfect for welcoming back many of our
seasonal residents and guests.”
While the first show is free, its talent is priceless! “Al Holland
headlines and he is legendary as a former member of ‘The Platters,’”
Janeen offered. “He is friends with several Friends of the Arts board
members and a big supporter of Fort Myers Beach. He has been with us the
past 6 years, so it wouldn’t be a ‘Winter Concert Series’ without Al!
Jo List is a ‘Friends of the Arts’ Board Member, who is well-known and
beloved on this island, as much for her personality as her magnificent
voice, and is a real fan favorite. The Pearl Street Band is made up of
several talented island musicians who play their own original music.” FULL ARTICLE
