FMB Opens Beaches and Beach Parking

Town Opens Property Grounds

The Town of Fort Myers Beach Council voted unanimously to lift COVID-19 beach-related restrictions and reopen the beach, beach accesses and public parking beginning Saturday, May 2. They took this and associated actions at a 2-hour virtual Special Meeting on Friday, May 1. In addition to opening the beach, the beach access parking will reopen along with the public areas at the Bay Oaks Recreational Center, Mound House and Newton Beach Park, as well as the Newton Beach Park public restroom, but not the Fort Myers Beach Community Pool. The Town will strictly enforce all Center for Disease Control guidelines and social distancing regulations but visitors do not need to wear masks. Mayor Ray Murphy began the meeting by immediately making a motion to “reopen our beach and parking, and for exercise the Mound House and Bay Oaks Recreational Center outside grounds, all tomorrow.” Council member Jim Atterholt seconded the motion, but Vice Mayor Rexann Hosafros state that “I do not feel comfortable moving forward with that before we hear the Public Comments,” with Atterholt agreeing. COVID-19 Updates

As the Southwest Florida community begins reopening from COVID-19-related closures and limitations, several announcements were made Friday.

Testing Site Opens The CenturyLink Sports Complex, home of Minnesota Twins Spring Training, will host a free drive-thru COVID-19 testing site beginning Monday, May 4. Testing will be available Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm, with the last car admitted at 3pm. No appointment, doctor’s order or symptoms are required to be tested. The test is free.  This site is expected to be able to provide 400 tests per day. Test results are expected in 48 hours. This is a State of Florida Department of Health testing location. Assistance will be provided by the National Guard and Lee County Sheriff’s Office. Location: 14100 Six Mile Cypress Parkway, Fort Myers.

Fort Myers Beach The sandy beaches of Fort Myers Beach will be open for all as of Saturday morning, along with beach access parking areas. The grounds of Mound House, Newton Park and Bay Oaks will be open for exercise.

State Parks Open On Monday, May 4, select Florida State Parks will open for the first time since March 23, allowing limited activities. Phase One of the parks’ reopening includes about 80 parks and trails. Lovers Key State Park will open just its boat ramp on Monday May 4.
